Fall Quilt in Progress

Just a quick post to show my work today.  I have had this Sandy Gervais fall fabric forever.  I love the intensity of the colors and just couldn’t think about actually cutting the fabric up.  But, today was the day even though it doesn’t feel a bit like fall outside.  It was cool this morning and had a hint of fall, but now it is over 80 degrees.  I am not so sure I am in love with this quilt just yet…like the colors, but not sure about the pattern.  Still have some work to do on the borders and they may change the entire look.  For now, today’s progress:

Started with 2 1/2" strips of fabric....

I always struggle with arranging the colors.  I tend to want everything matchy matchy and I think my quilts suffer for it.  So, I tried something different this time.  Still some matching, but complementary colors.  Still not so sure….

Figuring Out the Color Sequence - Decided on Color Grouping

I strip pieced all the 2 1/2 inch strips together.

Sewing Into Strips

Then cut against the original sewing lines into 2 1/2 ” strips again.  Then laid out some ideas for the quilt top and went for it.

Sew, Cut and Resew…..

Fabric Detail

For now, here is my progress….it didn’t turn out the way I imagined it and I am not so sure that is is pleasing to my eye right now.  The quilt is made entirely of 2 1/2 ” squares.  I need to add some thicker borders to increase the size of the quilt and to frame the colors and tie everything together.  Should be interesting….

Progress So Far....Still not so sure.

I am already thinking of the perfect flannel backing that would make this quilt warm and snuggly.  Or even, a great wide border with an applique.  Stay tuned.

Pumpkin Love

I love pumpkins.  I am not sure why…maybe it’s because they come with the season and I love the season.  Or, maybe not.  I do like pumpkin pie and pumpkin cheesecake and pumpkin bars and pumpkin seeds.  Okay…never mind.  I LIKE LOVE PUMPKINS.  I like how different each one is and how imperfectly perfect they seem to be.  Depending on how they sat and how they were cared for depends on whether or not we pick them for our front door.  I like their color…the richness of the orange has me hooked.  I know there are white and yellow pumpkins…but I still like mine orange.  I am amazed by all of the pumpkin decorating ideas out there so I thought I would share:

The Simple Things…That Make Me Happy

On my way into work early yesterday morning, I found myself thinking about the really simple things that make me happy.  The reality is that we spend so much time focusing on what we need to improve upon, do differently, do a little bit more or better that we often don’t stop to just appreciate what is.  So, in that moment (one of the only times of the day that is quiet enough to think this way), I made a mental list of things that really make me happy.

  • Rain falling from the sky (not drizzle, but rain)
  • The smell of rain
  • The color orange
  • Pumpkins (thus the color orange maybe)
  • Fall - The Season
  • Fresh Sheets & Lots of Heavy Covers
  • Fresh Air and Open Windows
  • The smell of a new book (even though I don’t buy them much anymore because of my ipad)
  • The songs that bring you right back in the moment
  • A good hug when I walk in the front door
  • Anticipation and the butterflies that come with it
  • Accomplishment and how fleeting it is…that one moment in time before things move on
  • Challenge
  • Creating
Now, it’s really easy to make a list of those things that you “buy” that you think bring you happiness (shoes, handbags, etc), but I intentionally tried to stay away from those quick and easy fixes.  And, do they really bring you happiness anyways?  I think we would like to think so, but in the end probably not.
Off to create today…finish a few projects and start some new ones.  Photos coming later.
Happy Day
Wendy
